Wayland COA board presses for January groundbreaking on new Community Center

WAYLAND — December 12, 2023 — Wayland Council on Aging board pushes town to hold January groundbreaking on new Community Center. Vice Chair William Sterling told the board Tuesday that Tower Construction signed its contract Nov. 21 and is scheduled for substantial completion in mid-December 2024, though March 2025 is more realistic. Members asked that the request for a mid-January ceremony be put in writing to the acting town manager "in fairness to the citizens of the town, who are the ones who are paying the bill." Sterling flagged unresolved issues: solar installer SOLECT must reinforce the roof before close-in, and a MassDOT request to allow truck and emergency access from Old Connecticut Path remains pending. The board approved Nov. 14 minutes unanimously on a motion from Frank Kennedy. Director Julie reported an $8,000 MCOA grant — against a $25,000 request — to support medical taxi rides.
