Wayland Planning Board schedules Feb. 13 forum on Route 20 redevelopment vision

WAYLAND — December 12, 2023 — Wayland Planning Board unveils Route 20 redevelopment vision, sets Feb. 13 public forum. The board reviewed a three-phase concept from BETA Group landscape architect Randy Collins that would narrow travel lanes, add on-street parking, push two- to two-and-a-half-story mixed-use buildings to the sidewalk and connect Route 20 to Town Hall and the rail trail. Member Dan Hill called for larger buildings and less parking — "I think the parking is a waste of space" — while Chair Anette Lewis rejected dedicated bike lanes on Route 20 over truck-traffic safety. The board also agreed to ask town counsel whether roughly $30,000 in developer holdback funds can finance a peer-review engineer for the chronically flooded Whittemore Place subdivision, withdrew its Launcher Way zoning appeal without prejudice as untimely, and conceded it still has not identified a 25-acre parcel to meet the Jan. 15 MBTA Communities zoning deadline.
