Council on Aging endorses 25-year solar deal for community center

WAYLAND — March 25, 2024 — Wayland Council on Aging Board unanimously backs 25-year solar PPA for new community center. The 165-kilowatt rooftop and canopy system, presented to the board March 25 by sustainability manager Abby and Energy and Climate Committee associate member John Harper, would offset "100 percent of the building's energy usage" and is sized to deliver "net savings from year one," Harper said. The canopy was cut roughly 70 percent from its original span to a "Y and T" layout after neighbors objected at Planning Board review. Member William Sterling reported the December completion target will likely slip after crews hit a heavily reinforced concrete pad believed to be a former Raytheon radar-tower foundation. Director Julie said the town's MassDevelopment transportation grant is fully exhausted and a tree-totaled 16-passenger van will be replaced with a 12-passenger model. Chair Betsy Soule set the next meeting for April 29.
