Wayland FinCom approves year-end transfers, including $236,000 for Minuteman students

WAYLAND — June 26, 2023 — Wayland Finance Committee approves $300,000 in FY23 year-end transfers and previews a tight FY25. The committee voted 6-0 Monday to accept transfers presented by Finance Director Brian, including roughly $39,000 for Medicaid, about $25,000 for snow and ice driven by salt costs, and $236,000 to cover three students at Minuteman Regional — $141,000 in tuition and $95,000 in transportation that the director said runs "about $450 a game" through First Student regardless of ridership. Looking to FY25, he told members he does not see an override next year but called FY26 "a real possibility," with full-day kindergarten potentially pushing the budget to a 4 to 4.5 percent increase. Member Kelly Lappin pushed for "root cause analysis" on why funded capital projects keep stalling, citing the $900,000 standpipe borrowing still awaiting grant decisions. Member Michael Hoyle floated pursuing a GFOA budget award modeled on Medfield's. Next meeting July 24.
