Wayland Finance Committee leans against FY28 override, wants budget cuts explored first
Finance Committee · Meeting of August 24, 2026
Wayland Finance Committee resists FY28 override, wants cuts explored first. Members reviewed Finance Director Brian Keveny's updated multi-year model at their Aug. 24 meeting and coalesced around holding off on an override recommendation for fiscal 2028, now that a favorable retirement assessment has narrowed the projected shortfall to roughly $817,000. The town's FY28 retirement assessment came in at $7.4 million, about $363,000 lower than forecast.
Committee member Brian O'Hurley's probabilistic simulation showed a roughly one-third chance FY28 could end in surplus under optimistic assumptions. Member Bill Huss said he could make an override case for a $5 million deficit "but to the numbers we're talking about, I think it's a really hard argument to make." Member Iris warned that any override this year effectively commits Wayland to annual overrides through 2037. The committee approved Aug. 17 minutes 5-0-1 and will next meet Sept. 8.
