Wayland Finance Committee Votes 5-0 to Seek No-Override Fiscal 2028 Budget

Wayland Finance Committee votes unanimously to prefer a no-override budget for fiscal year 2028. The five-member panel voted 5-0 Monday on a three-part motion asking the town and schools to produce a non-override budget for comparison, calling for a six-month focused analysis of fiscal years 2029 through 2031 by a possible separately appointed committee of residents, and stipulating that no override question appear on any election ballot before the May 2027 annual town election. Chair Carl Barnes said the Finance Director's most recent model, as of August 31, projects a deficit of roughly $631,000 but that a $80,000 debt correction not yet incorporated is likely to push that figure toward $711,000.
"The train maybe isn't going 100 miles an hour, maybe it's slowed to 75 at the moment," Barnes said, describing the School Committee's posture on a three-year override after it learned the town may also pursue a debt exclusion for a $2 million Massachusetts School Building Authority feasibility study. The committee also unanimously appointed Barnes as its representative to the new Fire Department Staffing Working Group.
