The Permanent Municipal Building Committee on Tuesday directed designers to break the library renovation into separate elevator, site-work and interior contracts after questioning whether a single general contractor added value to such disparate scopes. Members pressed the design team on a $300,000 elevator modernization estimate, saying comparable jobs have come in for "less than half of that." On the Council on Aging community center, project manager Ben reported a $130,000 placeholder to remove 450 cubic yards of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, against pending change orders totaling $421,581 and a remaining contingency of about $155,000 that one member called "critically low." Stone's Bridge bids open May 2 against a $400,000 town-meeting request.
