Wayland building committee shifts excess soil plan after DEP signals landfill rejection

WAYLAND — July 30, 2024 — Wayland committee abandons landfill soil plan, redesigns Council on Aging grading on the fly. The Permanent Municipal Building Committee learned July 30 that the state Department of Environmental Protection will be "reluctant" to approve placing roughly 1,600 cubic yards of excess project soil at the town's south landfill, forcing a Plan B that keeps about 1,700 cubic yards on site through expanded berms. The contractor set an Aug. 5 deadline for a disposal decision. A separate $100,000 pending change order over sprinkler heads incompatible with already-installed spray-foam insulation drew pushback from the owner's representative, who called it "errors and omissions" the town should not have to pay. Previously approved Change Order No. 3 totaled $52,236. Substantial completion has slipped to late February. Incoming facilities director Mike Fayette, formerly of Emerson College and Lee Kennedy Co., was introduced.
