Wayland building committee shifts to plan B on senior center soil disposal

WAYLAND — July 30, 2024 — Wayland's Permanent Municipal Building Committee pivots to on-site berms after DEP signals no to landfill soil. Owner's project manager Kim Buell told the panel July 30 that the state Department of Environmental Protection will be "reluctant" to allow roughly 1,600 cubic yards of unregulated excess soil from the Council on Aging and Community Center site to be placed at the town's South Landfill, with the contractor demanding a decision by Aug. 5. The civil engineer has redesigned grading to absorb about 1,700 yards in enlarged berms. Change Order No. 3 totaling $52,236 was approved in July, and a pending sprinkler-head change order of nearly $100,000 — tied to UL-incompatibility with already-installed spray foam — is being contested as a designer error. Approved change orders now total $198,000 against $105,000 in contingency. Substantial completion has slipped to late February. The committee also welcomed new buildings director Mike Fayette.
