Wayland Select Board votes to oppose Hanscom airfield expansion

WAYLAND — September 11, 2023 — Wayland Select Board opposes Hanscom jet expansion and approves new Sherman's Bridge stop signs. The board voted 4-0 to resolve against expansion of private jet facilities at Hanscom Field, joining Bedford, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln, after Vice-Chair Doug Levine renewed his motion citing "unavoidable adverse climate and environmental impacts." Police Chief Edward Burman presented a stealth-radar study logging 12,405 vehicles on Sherman's Bridge Road between June 13 and 20, with an average speed of 36 mph in a 25-mph zone and an 85th-percentile speed of 42 mph; officers ran 19 directed patrols, stopped 26 vehicles, and issued four written warnings. The board also authorized Town Manager Michael McCall to file Oct. 6 comments with the DPU on community choice aggregation, and appointed Alex Finlayson to the Historic District Commission. McCall said a possible special town meeting to ratify a teachers MOU would cost $25,000 to $50,000.
