Wayland Select Board interviews four candidates for School Committee vacancy

WAYLAND — July 5, 2023 — Wayland Select Board interviews four of five School Committee applicants, defers vote. Chair William Whitney and the board heard from Sheetal Acharya, former nine-year committee member Jeannie Downs, Steven Glovsky and Ken Hellrich in a joint session with the School Committee on July 5, but tabled the appointment so a fifth candidate traveling on military duty can be heard June 20 or 22. The same meeting approved a $2,840,500 construction contract with Elizabeth Contracting for Fire Station 2 — a $2,742,500 base bid plus $55,000 epoxy flooring and $43,000 exterior repainting alternates — after members caught a mismatch between the contract's written total and its line items. The board voted 5-0 to accept a one-time COLA for roughly 245 Middlesex County retirees under Chapter 269 of the Acts of 2022, costing Wayland about $300,000 starting in FY26, and authorized Town Manager Michael McCall to sign a $12,318 Regional Housing Services Office agreement. Glovsky warned he would be an "aggressive member" challenging ideas on the committee.
