Wayland Select Board inserts drive-thru zoning article in 4-0-1 vote
WAYLAND -- January 21, 2025, Wayland Select Board advances drive-thru zoning bylaw 4-0-1, with Whitney abstaining. The board voted Tuesday to insert Article Z, which would permit fast-casual restaurants with pre-order pickup windows, borrowing language from Sturbridge's 2017 bylaw that was approved by the state attorney general. William Whitney objected to the pace, saying he was "uncomfortable with all the changes that have been made so quickly" and that the Economic Development Committee should not be "writing zoning." Member Thomas J. Fay, citing a town survey of roughly 1,500 residents, countered that delay would put board members' views "ahead of theirs." The board referred Articles Z, HH and II to the Planning Board under MGL Chapter 40A, Section 5, and held Article CC, a non-binding resolution on 195 Main Street, until after a Feb. 3 public forum. Members divided 42 warrant articles among themselves and canceled the Jan. 27 meeting.
