Wayland Select Board denies all private-road plowing appeals for winter
WAYLAND -- October 29, 2018, Wayland Select Board denies all 21 private-road plowing appeals, will revisit policy. The board took no action Monday on appeals from residents of 12 private roads, including Audubon Lane, Concord Road, High Rock Road and Quincy Road, leaving intact a May policy that ends town plowing for ways deemed shared driveways or unsafe to plow. Residents said private contracts now run $4,000-$5,000 a year and that few plow companies are taking new customers. Malcolm Astley of Boston Post Road told the board the enabling statute was written "to include, not to exclude." Members agreed to seek further review of Highfield Road and High Rock Road and to consult town counsel before changing the policy. Separately, the board voted 5-0 to authorize Town Administrator Louise Miller to negotiate sale of an individual tax lien on 51 Claypit Hill Road; the town's outstanding tax-lien receivables stand at roughly $1.2 million, down from $2.3 million in 2016. Housing Authority Chair Susan Weinstein delivered a $41,234.11 PILOT payment.
