Wayland board advances marijuana articles despite election notice failure
WAYLAND -- October 9, 2018, Wayland board confronts botched marijuana election notice, advances both ballot articles anyway. Resident George Harris told selectmen at the Oct. 9 meeting that the town failed to mail the warrant for the Oct. 2 special election to every household as required by local bylaw, an omission Town Administrator Louise Miller confirmed after consulting town counsel. Turnout was roughly 18 percent. Options now include a ratifying revote in April, special legislation from the governor, or delaying the prohibition article. The board nonetheless voted 5-0 to insert and recommend both Article F, a townwide marijuana prohibition, and Article G, a Boston Post Road overlay district. Members also voted 5-0 to back a $791,000 River's Edge asbestos appropriation, 0-5 against a citizen petition restricting firearms discharge within 1,000 feet of buildings, and 4-0 to establish a Cable Advisory Committee of up to five members. A state plumbing-board ruling added roughly $250,000 to the high school stadium restroom scope.
