Wayland Personnel Board approves fire secretary upgrade, IT senior hire

WAYLAND — June 13, 2023 — Wayland Personnel Board approves fire secretary upgrade and IT hire, balks at unfunded HR position. The board voted unanimously Tuesday to reclassify the Fire Department secretary from grade N1 to N4 ($51,953–$67,784) and make it full-time by combining a 19-hour role with a 20-hour Public Buildings job share. Members also approved hiring a senior IT systems administrator at grade N9, step six — $98,043 in fiscal 2023, rising to $101,279 on July 1 — to fill a position vacant nearly a year. HR Director Kate Hodges said the town used a staffing agency because "it's really tough to fill these technical roles." Chair Maryanne Peabody refused to approve a part-time HR assistant job description, saying the Finance Committee and finance director confirmed no funding exists: "I cannot validate that there is an open position or money to fund a position." A Community Service Officer job description passed at grade P1, with member Mary Ellen Castagno abstaining.
