Wayland Personnel Board Defers Votes on Driver Monitoring and Remote Work Policies
Wayland Personnel Board reviews driver license monitoring and remote work rules but takes no final action.
Personnel Board · Meeting of July 29, 2026
Wayland Personnel Board reviews driver license monitoring and remote work rules but takes no final action. The three-member quorum, Chair Maryanne Peabody, Jill Zukerman, and Dave Williams, met July 29 with Personnel Director Kate Ryan to review a draft policy that would enroll covered town employees in the Registry of Motor Vehicles' Driver Verification System, a free program that flags license suspensions and expirations in near-real time. The board identified gaps in the draft, including what happens if an employee refuses to enroll and how disciplinary procedures should be addressed, and agreed a vote should wait until union negotiations and revisions are complete.
The board then held an extended discussion on whether to establish a formal hybrid work policy, with Ryan noting the town has relied on informal department-head discretion since the COVID-19 pandemic and that a survey of peer municipalities found several have intentionally chosen no policy because of equity concerns for employees in public-safety and field roles that cannot be done remotely. The board approved minutes from March 23 and June 24, 2026, each on a 2-0 roll call vote, with Williams temporarily out of the room.
