Wayland landfill committee drops commercial, wastewater uses from 17-item list

WAYLAND — November 24, 2025 — Wayland's Route 20 South Landfill Visioning Committee began culling a 17-item wish list, ruling out commercial buildings and a wastewater leaching field. Chair Tom Fay led the Zoom meeting Monday as engineer Tom Holder reported three new borings showed waste depths of 12, 18 and 29 feet east to west across the capped site, and said the state DEP has called structures on the property "a stretch" to permit. The committee kept an athletic field, bus parking for the town's 21 buses, a Mass Central Rail Trail connection and parking-canopy solar in play. Recreation Commission Chair Asa Foster urged a field at the site during public comment, noting the alternative Holiday Road parcel would require clearing roughly 2,000 trees. Member Mark Norton said town fields are "stressed" by growing lacrosse and field hockey demand. The meeting adjourned at 8:46 a.m. after member Michael Spelman had to leave, costing the panel its quorum.
