Wayland committee authorizes Route 20 landfill proof-of-concept study

WAYLAND — March 29, 2024 — Wayland committee authorizes feasibility study for 17-acre Route 20 South Landfill redevelopment. The Route 20 South Landfill Visioning Committee voted unanimously Friday to have Weston & Sampson and a design firm called the Collaborative produce a proof of concept for a site that could combine 21 homes, a regulation playing field, a highway materials recycling center, school bus parking and solar arrays. Member Clifford Lewis sketched roughly $6 million in capital costs — about $1.5 million each for the field and recycling center, $1 million for bus parking and $500,000 for engineering — and argued housing revenue could offset most of it. Member Mike Spelman warned the design must contend with "a lot of water that's going to have to be dealt with, and it's not necessarily clean water." A second unanimous vote authorized spending from existing project funds, with scope and price to return to the committee before any expenditure. Chair Thomas Fay said a site walk would be scheduled before May Town Meeting.
