Wayland Finance Panel Cuts Override Estimate to $458,500
Finance Committee · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Wayland's Finance Committee said updated school projections cut the town's potential fiscal 2028 override need nearly in half, to roughly $458,500. Member Brian O'Hurlihy walked the panel through a revised multi-year budget model showing fiscal 2028-30 school cost growth of 4.2 to 4.7 percent, below the 5 percent previously assumed, and argued that 1.15 percentage points of the model's 6.06 percent projected tax increase stems from a prior-year debt-timing maneuver, not new spending, saying he was "troubled by asking the town and the schools to go back and cut their budgets" to chase a lower headline number. The committee approved its September 14 minutes 3-0 with two abstentions, reviewed a capital plan featuring a $970,000 middle school fire-sensor upgrade and an $850,000 IT cybersecurity request, and set its next meeting for October 19.
