Wayland board hears pitch for indoor sports complex on vacant DPW parcel

WAYLAND — July 29, 2024 — Wayland resident group pitches privately built sports complex on vacant DPW parcel. A working group led by Donny Guernoni asked the Select Board on July 29 to seek town meeting authorization for a long-term ground lease of 195 Main Street, where it would build a 29,000- to 34,000-square-foot nonprofit-run facility with up to six basketball courts, a convertible turf field and a walking track for seniors. Chair William Whitney called the proposal "intriguing"; member Anne Brensley urged a hybrid for-profit/nonprofit structure. The board separately voted 5-0 to adopt five FY25 objectives, replacing last year's 62-item list, and appointed Katie Noble Harris and Val Ilchenko to the Economic Development Committee. Town Manager Michael McCall reported E. coli at the Chamberlain well had triggered activation of the town's MWRA emergency connection.
