WAYLAND — June 10, 2024 — Wayland Audit Committee gets full account of $114,000 IRS penalty tied to former treasurer. Finance Director Brian told the committee the town's former treasurer failed to remit payroll taxes on time during 2021 and did not flag IRS notices, with the lapses only surfacing after she left for another municipality. CLA was hired to reconcile 26 pay periods, and the town filed abatement requests for eight quarters before a November 2023 IRS judgment ordered immediate payment of $114,000. "This wasn't a case of an internal control weakness. This was a performance issue," Brian said. Member Klaus Shigley said Finance Committee members had asked why the matter was not on the Audit Committee agenda. The committee unanimously re-elected Chair Samantha to a second one-year term and approved its draft annual report and prior minutes as amended. Member Randy is leaving the committee, citing a likely move out of town.
