Household hazardous waste collection set for Saturday

The Wayland Health Department announced a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Wayland DPW Garage, 66 River Road, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The event is free and open to all Wayland residents, but drop-off is by appointment only and registration is required. Residents can register through the town's online registration form.

The collection facility will accept a range of materials, including adhesives, oil-based paints, household cleaners and garden fertilizers. It will not accept latex paint, propane tanks, computers and TVs, batteries, styrofoam, asbestos, radioactive waste, infectious or biological waste, prescription medicines or commercial hazardous materials.

The Health Department offered several tips for safely transporting hazardous materials to the site: keep materials in their original containers with caps and lids tightened, sort and pack oil paint, pesticides and household cleaners separately, use sturdy upright boxes padded with newspaper, never mix chemicals, and pack the car and drive directly to the site.
