The Town of Wayland announced Oct. 28 a set of safety tips for residents ahead of Halloween.

The town does not designate specific hours for trick-or-treating and is encouraging the community to follow general safety guidance instead.

The tips include looking both ways before crossing and using crosswalks or traffic signals, with electronic devices put away while walking. Trick-or-treaters are advised to walk on sidewalks rather than in the street when possible.

The town recommends that a responsible adult accompany young children while trick-or-treating, and that older children who go without adult supervision stay together and stick to familiar areas.

Families are encouraged to wear bright, reflective costumes or add reflective tape, and to carry glow sticks or flashlights so they can see and be seen by drivers. Motorists are asked to drive cautiously and slowly and to watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.

The town also suggests choosing costumes that won't create tripping hazards, using fire-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories, and opting for Halloween makeup instead of masks that could obstruct vision.
