Historical Commission maps signage plan for Castlegate and Dudley Woods

WAYLAND — July 1, 2024 — Wayland Historical Commission stretches $4,396 across two interpretive sign projects. At its July 1 meeting, members endorsed a draft budget pairing $1,896 in Community Preservation Committee funds for a Castlegate sign with $2,500 in Recreation Department funds for a Dudley Woods sign, using designer Carol Holtz's $800 template fee and $400 per-sign layout charge across both projects. Members said a Dudley Woods panel will likely consolidate six topics into one because "one sign is better than no signs." The commission also reported its first $15,000 cemetery restoration invoice has been submitted, with priority-one stones in the North Cemetery complete and work underway in the South Cemetery. Town Manager Michael McCall has bundled a $200,000 town center gift with a $25,000 state earmark for rail trail work, but members said an archaeological dig at the engine house — estimated at $25,000 to $75,000 — should take priority over additional benches.
