Wayland Historical Commission and library clash over local history collection move

Wayland Historical Commission spends half its meeting contesting library plan to move local history collection upstairs. Library Director Chris Lindquist told commissioners the Wayland Free Library will relocate special collections from a main-floor wooden cabinet, deemed unsuitable by state preservation specialist Jessica Collati of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, into an upstairs locked "Archives Alcove" by Oct. 15, with new finding aids by Nov. 15. Commissioner Katherine Gardner-Westcott, a librarian since 1988, said the change makes the collection "less secure" and less accessible, arguing updated ALA guidance and eleven local libraries favor open shelving.
Commissioner Sandy Coy proposed a compromise of mesh-fronted metal shelves in the library's planned glass-walled quiet zone. Interim Chair R. Richard Conard called for a smaller working group with library trustees.
Separately, longtime member Bradford Carver announced he is resigning after six years, and the cemetery restoration rebid goes out this week with a Sept. 8 site visit at North Cemetery.
