WAYLAND — July 1, 2024 — Wayland Recreation Commission hears pitch for an indoor sports facility at the former DPW site. Resident Scott Walters and a co-presenter outlined a resident-led non-profit modeled on the Winchester Soccer Club's converted gelatin factory — a $5 million 2018 purchase — with the town leasing 195 Main Street long-term, citing Wellesley's "99-year, $1-a-year" template. The working group is targeting a December 1 article-filing deadline for May 2025 Town Meeting and a 2028 opening. Commissioner Brud Wright pushed back, saying he was "uncomfortable with private ownership of town property" and preferred a town-managed model. The Commission also voted unanimously to name member Lesley Stewart as its Community Preservation Committee representative, and the Recreation Director reported roughly $40 million in capital requests logged since May 1.
