WAYLAND — Wayland High School's boys soccer team saw its unbeaten season come to an end Thursday, falling 3-1 to Cambridge Rindge & Latin School just two days after pushing its record to 7-0 with a win over Acton-Boxborough. The loss headlined a busy, mixed week for the Warriors that also included three field hockey losses, a one-stroke golf defeat, a split cross country meet and a bounce-back sweep in volleyball.
TOWN
Developers behind the Town Center redevelopment told the Planning Board Wednesday that the ice skating rink planned for the site will not open this winter as originally hoped. Representatives said the project, done in partnership with the Eliza J. Norton Foundation, now targets next winter instead, citing unresolved work on lighting, public safety coordination and permitting before the rink can move forward. Board members also debated whether to let the development keep the decorative string lights already installed along its outdoor space, weighing input from the fire department on ladder access before deciding how to handle both that question and future lighting at the skating area.
HIGH SCHOOL
Boys soccer looked like one of the best stories of the fall after opening 6-0, and the Warriors kept it going Tuesday with a 2-1 win on the road over Acton-Boxborough to reach 7-0. But Cambridge Rindge & Latin School ended the run Thursday, beating Wayland 3-1 at Stadium Field to hand the Warriors their first loss of the season and send them into the back half of October at 7-1.
Girls soccer stayed strong, beating Acton-Boxborough 2-1 at Stadium Field on Tuesday. The junior varsity girls also won, 5-3 over Acton-Boxborough's JV1 squad, and the freshman boys split two games, falling 3-1 to Acton-Boxborough's JV2 team Monday before beating Cambridge Rindge & Latin 2-1 Wednesday at Bennett Field. The freshman girls fell 1-0 to Cambridge Rindge & Latin Wednesday, and the boys JV won both of its games this week, 2-0 over Acton-Boxborough's JV1 and 4-1 over Cambridge Rindge & Latin.
Field hockey had its toughest stretch of the season, losing all three games it played: 2-0 at Holliston High School on Monday, 7-1 at Medfield Senior High School on Thursday and 3-1 to Ashland High School on Friday at home. The Medfield loss was the Warriors' most lopsided defeat of the young season.
Girls volleyball split a demanding week, falling 3-2 in sets at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School on Monday before rebounding Wednesday with a 3-0 sweep of Boston Latin School at the Field House. The freshman team also beat Boston Latin, 2-0.
Boys golf dropped a tight match at Boston Latin School on Wednesday, losing by a single stroke, 230-229, at Devine Golf Course. Wayland's cross country teams split a dual meet with Bedford High School the same day: the boys team won, 21-34, while the girls team lost a close one, 30-29.
YOUTH
Wayland Youth Soccer announced this week that its seventh and eighth grade Boys Strikers team has qualified for the MTOC Tournament. The league is also building out new volunteer committees as part of a modernization push; Finance Advisory and Governance & Compliance committees are still searching for chairs, while committees covering coaching and player development, community events, technology, fields and scheduling, equipment, and referee development are looking for additional members.
LOOKING AHEAD
Boys soccer will look to answer its first loss quickly, while girls soccer, volleyball and field hockey all have games on tap as October playoff positioning starts to take shape. Wayland Youth Soccer's Boys Strikers team begins tournament play at the MTOC in the weeks ahead.
