Warriors Football Blanks Waltham 27-0 To Stay Unbeaten
WAYLAND — Wayland High School football shut out Waltham High School 27-0 on Friday to push its unbeaten start to 4-0, the headline result in a week that also saw Warriors soccer teams keep winning while field hockey and volleyball hit rough patches.
HIGH SCHOOL
Wayland's varsity football team blanked Waltham High School 27-0 Friday at Stadium Field, the Warriors' fourth straight win without a loss this fall after wins over Hopkinton High School, Acton-Boxborough and Newton South High School in prior weeks. The junior varsity, though, fell to Waltham on Saturday at Leary Field.
Boys soccer kept pace, sweeping Bedford High School across three levels. The varsity won 2-0 on Wednesday to improve to 6-0 this season, the junior varsity routed Bedford 4-0, and the freshman team won 3-0 Thursday at Bennett Field.
Girls soccer won twice. The varsity beat Bedford 2-1 on the road Wednesday, then held off Westford Academy 2-1 at home Friday. The junior varsity beat Bedford 1-0 on the road Wednesday before falling 5-3 to Westford Academy at home Friday.
Field hockey had a tougher week. The varsity lost 4-3 to Bedford on Tuesday and 5-1 to Acton-Boxborough on Thursday at Stadium Field. The junior varsity tied Bedford 2-2 Tuesday and lost 2-0 to Acton-Boxborough Thursday; Saturday's junior varsity trip to Framingham High School was canceled, and the varsity's game there had no final score reported.
Volleyball's varsity beat Bedford in straight sets Tuesday, 3-0, then dropped back-to-back three-set matches, falling 3-2 to Belmont on Wednesday and 3-1 to Acton-Boxborough on Thursday. The junior varsity and freshman squads each won once and lost twice against the same three opponents, with the JV topping Belmont 2-1 and the freshman team opening with a 2-0 win over Bedford.
Boys golf continued to struggle, falling to Weston High School by just two strokes, 264-262, on Tuesday at Pine Brook Country Club, then losing by wider margins to Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School (239-224 at Sandy Burr Country Club) on Wednesday and Westford Academy (251-220 at Nabnassett Lake Country Club) on Thursday.
YOUTH
Wayland Little League announced the completion of the Eliza J. Norton Foundation's "Build with Heart" dugout project at Cochituate Park, a project the all-volunteer league backed as a Champion Sponsor. The league's fall registration has closed, and families with questions were directed to the league's registrar.
Wayland Youth Soccer is recruiting volunteers for new leadership committees as part of a modernization push, with two chair positions open: Finance Advisory, chaired by Zack Ventress, and Governance and Compliance, which still needs a chair. Other committees, covering coaching and player development, community events, technology, fields and scheduling, equipment, and referee development, are also seeking members.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Warriors carry a 4-0 football record and a 6-0 boys soccer record into the heart of October, with girls soccer also unbeaten over its last two games; field hockey, volleyball and golf will look to turn around rough midweek stretches. Off the fields, Wayland Little League's newly finished Cochituate Park dugouts and Wayland Youth Soccer's committee search continue into the coming weeks.
