WAYLAND — Bedford High School routed Wayland High School football 55-30 on Friday at Sabourin Field, snapping the Warriors' five-game unbeaten run two weeks after their 47-30 shootout win over Acton-Boxborough. Field hockey and boys soccer each answered with their own two-game winning streaks, giving the Warriors a split week as the fall season heads toward its final stretch.

TOWN

Board of Public Works member Carol Martin, the board's liaison to the Select Board, told colleagues Oct. 20 that a dockside headache at Town Beach turned into a cost-saving team effort. Two floating dock sections owned by the Recreation Department had begun sinking, so volunteers from Wayland-Weston Rowing and the Boy Scouts worked with Recreation's Catherine Brenna and Department of Public Works staff to buy two demo dock sections spotted at a vendor during the Head of the Charles trials and haul them from Cambridge to the Wayland Town Beach. DPW Superintendent Joe Doucette lent heavy-duty straps for the move, and Martin said the do-it-yourself approach saved the town about $1,500 compared with hiring movers.

HIGH SCHOOL

Football's run at an unbeaten season ended in a shootout gone wrong. After cruising to a 5-0 start that included wins over Newton South (42-19), Waltham (27-0) and Acton-Boxborough (47-30), the Warriors could not keep pace with Bedford on the road Friday, falling 55-30 at Sabourin Field. The Boys Junior Varsity squad also lost in a lopsided game this week, falling 18-6 to Acton-Boxborough on Oct. 19, while the freshman team dropped its game against Bedford on Thursday.

Field hockey turned last week's skid into a two-game winning streak. The Warriors opened the week with a 5-1 loss at Waltham on Monday, but regrouped at Stadium Field to beat Newton South 4-0 on Wednesday and Framingham 4-1 on Friday. The back-to-back wins reverse the stretch of results that had weighed on the team's bid for a perfect season earlier this month.

Boys soccer also bounced back after its unbeaten run ended last week. The Warriors beat Concord-Carlisle 2-1 on the road Tuesday, then returned home to blank Waltham 5-1 on Thursday. The freshman team mirrored the varsity's recovery, losing 1-0 to Concord-Carlisle on Monday before beating Waltham 2-1 on Wednesday. The boys JV squad, however, lost 1-0 to Concord-Carlisle on Tuesday.

Girls soccer and volleyball each had mixed weeks. The girls varsity soccer team was shut out 5-0 by Concord-Carlisle on Tuesday before salvaging a 1-1 tie at Waltham on Thursday. The girls JV squad tied Concord-Carlisle 3-3 and beat Waltham 2-1, while the freshman team tied 0-0 with Concord-Carlisle and beat Waltham 1-0. Volleyball opened strong with a 3-0 sweep at Waltham on Monday but could not sustain it, losing 3-0 to Newton South on Wednesday and 1-3 in sets to Belmont on Friday.

LOOKING AHEAD

With the regular season entering its final weeks, football will look to regroup from its first loss while field hockey tries to extend its new winning streak and boys soccer works to build on back-to-back wins as MIAA tournament seeding comes into focus across the fall slate.
