Wayland Select Board orders traffic study after bicyclist hit at Five Paths

WAYLAND -- December 3, 2020, Wayland Select Board orders traffic engineering study at Five Paths after September bicycle crash. The board voted 4-0 Monday to authorize Town Administrator Louise Miller to hire a consultant to evaluate the Route 27/126 intersection where a 13-year-old bicyclist was airlifted Sept. 1 after being struck in a crosswalk roughly 50 yards south of the signal. Police Chief Suanic presented two options, extending the sidewalk to move the crossing to the signalized intersection, or installing button-activated LED flashers at the existing location, and the Board of Public Works has already voted to purchase 20-second flashers for installation "perhaps by a week after school starts," DPW Director Tom Holder said. Lt. Sean Gibbons reported 858 town crashes from 2017 through mid-2020, with 75 percent showing no road-condition factor. In a separate 4-0 vote, the board hired a surveyor to determine whether the Potter Road-Stonebridge Road bridge sits in Wayland or Framingham, potentially voiding a 50-50 cost split. Finance Director Brian Keveny reported FY20 free cash will be certified at $10.9 million, up $3.3 million.
