Wayland Select Board backs library bid to delay state grant deadline

WAYLAND -- August 21, 2017, Wayland Select Board unanimously backs trustees' bid for extension on $10.1M library grant deadline. Library Trustees Chair Aida Janis told the board Wayland was one of nine communities and one of three large-award recipients to receive a Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners grant of $10,137,980 toward a new library at 195 Main Street, but local funding must be locked in by Jan. 12, 2018. The board voted 5-0 to send a letter committing that, if the state grants an extension, the funding article and a ballot question will be placed before annual town meeting in the spring. Resident Judy Lang said the project would consume "51 percent of the projected 2019 capital budget," and Mike Lowery called it "a want and not a need." The board also appointed David Katz to a three-year ZBA term and opened a Nov. 14 special town meeting warrant.
