Wayland School Committee unveils new language-based program at Claypit Hill

WAYLAND — October 12, 2022 — Wayland launches Landmark-guided language-based program serving 10 elementary students. Special education teacher Megan Sullivan and reading specialist Jen Socha presented the new Claypit Hill program to the School Committee on Oct. 12, detailing 90 minutes of daily pull-out reading and writing instruction plus push-in support for math, science and social studies across grades two through four. Superintendent Omar Easy separately warned the committee that Wayland is the only area district that does not directly employ its school nurses and said a salary gap may force the schools to absorb them before the fiscal 2024 budget cycle, with any existing pay gap to be covered by town reserves. New Children's Way Director Abigail Dressler reported 63 preschoolers enrolled, 19 with IEPs and 21 speaking two or more languages. Student rep Madeline O'Leary pressed the committee on the $220 high school parking fee, which member Jeanne Downs said is legally restricted to lot plowing, upkeep and the attendant's salary.
