Wayland schools report drop in teen substance use
School Committee · Meeting of September 23, 2026
Wayland student vaping, drinking and distress all fell in the 2025 adolescent health survey. Health and Wellness Director Scott Parsegian and town Youth and Family Services Director Jay Fraguski told the School Committee that lifetime nicotine vapor use among high schoolers is 10.8 percent, down 25 points since 2018, and that all four grades reported alcohol use under 50 percent for the first time. Self-injury was reported by 15 percent of female and 6 percent of male students.
Fraguski's headline: "positive trends and healthy decisions. Don't stop talking about it." The committee approved an employee handbook 5-0, adopted a 2027-28 calendar without a graduation date, and refused to close out a capital project list after a $114,138.12 balance did not reconcile.
