Wayland Historical Commission refines Dudley Woods sign drafts, weighs funding gap

WAYLAND — May 6, 2024 — Wayland Historical Commission advances Dudley Woods interpretive signs as funding falls short. Chair Bradford Carver and members reviewed six draft panels written by Ann Gordon covering the trail's geology, Indigenous use, ice industry, summer cottages and shoe-era development, working to hold each to a 200-word designer limit. The commission has roughly $2,500 in Community Preservation funds for Dudley Woods and $1,800 for a Castle Gate pillar sign; Carver said the plan is to design "five terrific signs" and fundraise the rest. Member R. Richard Conard reported the depot's train order signal is mechanically complete with only LED work outstanding, and that 11 volunteers cleared brush along the rail trail over two days. Members also discussed a possible $25,000 state earmark for rail trail benches and signage, against an earlier PAL estimate of $75,000 to $100,000 for an engine house archaeological survey.
