Wayland Historical Commission picks new plaque specs, opens cemetery bids

WAYLAND — July 10, 2023 — Wayland Historical Commission settles plaque specs and opens three cemetery preservation bids. Members on July 10 agreed by consensus that future historic-house plaques will be 13-by-19-inch hand-painted cedar with a flat black-line border, ordered from a New Jersey vendor at roughly $160 per sign plus shipping, after Chair Bradford Carver reported the fabricator advised against marine board and against the older raised wooden border. The commission also confirmed three bids arrived on its cemetery headstone preservation RFP, with a four-person subcommittee — Carver, R. Richard Conard, Sherry Anne Bryant and the project chair — set to score technical proposals before sealed cost envelopes are opened. R. Richard Conard reported the Wayland Depot train order signal mast footing was installed June 19 atop a Sonotube after a contractor found the original posts "eaten by carpenter ants" four feet down. A roughly $53,000 CPC request to preserve 1860-1919 assessors' records is expected.
