Historical Commission to flag possible archaeological site at Veritas School

WAYLAND — February 5, 2024 — Wayland Historical Commission to flag Veritas School site as potentially archaeologically sensitive. Members who toured the Cochituate Road property, led by Tonya Largy, reported a 25-to-30-foot cliff, a rock shelter and large stone groupings near where the school plans construction, with the heaviest work slated for the ranch house at 172 Cochituate Road. The commission, chaired by Bradford Carver, agreed to draft a letter asking that an archaeologist monitor ground-disturbing work, while conceding it lacks authority to require mitigation. Separately, members reviewed Gravestone Services of New England's plans for cemetery work, discussing per-stone pricing of roughly $1,500 for Priority 1, $500 for Priority 2 and $200 for Priority 3, and praised the contractor's view that the work "requires an amazing amount of tenderness." Member Amanda Ciaccio was absent.
