Consultants urge housing, recreation mix for Wayland's South Landfill site

WAYLAND — March 6, 2024 — Wayland consultants pitch starter homes, playing field for capped South Landfill site. The Cecil Group's Ed Tucker and Caitlin Johnson told the Route 20 South Landfill Visioning Committee on Wednesday that roughly 2.5 acres of the 17-acre property appear to sit outside the capped landfill cells and could support about 21 housing units — 10 starter homes near 1,000 square feet and 11 age-restricted homes of 1,300 to 1,700 square feet — alongside a 165-by-360-foot multi-use field. Tucker called the parcel, except for its landfill past, "the highest-value town property" on that side of the river. Member Erin Gibbons pushed for affordable designations to bolster the town's Chapter 40B safe-harbor status, saying Wayland has "held up safe harbor for two years." Public Works Director Tom Holder said crews are roughly halfway through clearing trees and stumps. No votes were taken.
