Wayland Select Board votes 5-0 to offer first town manager job to Michael McCall

WAYLAND — December 10, 2022 — Wayland Select Board votes 5-0 to offer first town manager position to Michael McCall. After interviewing three finalists Saturday at the Council on Aging — Andrew McClain of Pepperell, California executive Beverly Marshall and Southbridge town manager Michael McCall — the board authorized Chair Cherry Carlson and GovHR consultant Mike Gillette to open contract negotiations, subject to a final review of references. Members Tom Fay and Adam Gutbezahl said Massachusetts experience and the need to implement the town's newly adopted town manager act tipped them toward McCall, who described himself as "an adaptive and a collaborative leader." Member Dave Watkins, who pushed for a board-level review of redacted reference checks before any contract is signed, said the town's roughly 100 open capital appropriations and fragmented committee structure demand centralized management. The board will take up negotiations in executive session Monday.
