Wayland school finance panel restarts long-range building plan

WAYLAND — July 24, 2024 — Wayland's School Committee Finance Subcommittee restarts long-range school building plan, eyes 2026 state filing. Chair Erin Lee and new member Betsy Cullen, joined later by Director of Finance and Operations Susan Bottan, agreed July 24 to bring the stalled long-range building plan back to the full School Committee and likely spin it into a separate master-planning advisory committee modeled on Lexington's. The subcommittee has $288,000 allocated in fiscal 2025 for early planning work and would need to file a Statement of Interest with the Massachusetts School Building Authority — a previous Wayland filing was rejected. Cullen called the 2017 RAP facilities report "very illuminating." Bottan said the town wants multi-year budget assumptions finalized by the end of August to avoid a fiscal 2026 operating override; the town's target figure for schools does not yet reflect teacher contract steps. The May 13 minutes were approved 2-0.
