Wayland School Committee unanimously appoints Betsy Gavron assistant superintendent
WAYLAND -- February 28, 2024, Wayland promotes interim Betsy Gavron to assistant superintendent on 4-0 vote. The School Committee, with member Ellen Rico absent, accepted Acting Superintendent David Fleischman's recommendation following a search that drew nearly 20 applicants and four first-round interviews on Feb. 8. HR consultant Suzanne Kenney said the selection advisory panel, including the PTO president, WTA leadership, a principal, a department head and the METCO director, found Gavron's answers on collaboration and equity "far above" the field and declined to advance weaker candidates to a public round. Fleischman credited Gavron with implementing the Bridges math curriculum and pushing through a kindergarten developmental checklist "we've wanted to do for eight years." The committee also voted 4-0 to recommend Town Meeting back Article Q replenishing the Special Education Reserve Fund, and Director of Finance Susan Bottan reported the operating budget will break even this year only with a $150,000 reserve transfer covering out-of-district special education costs.
