Wayland's former DPW site classified Tier 1 over PFAS in groundwater

WAYLAND — April 10, 2025 — Every well tested at Wayland's former DPW site exceeds the state PFAS drinking water standard. Licensed site professional Gould of CMG told residents Thursday that 195 Main St. is now a Tier 1 disposal site under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan because contaminated groundwater — with PFAS6 readings up to 172 parts per trillion against a 20 ppt standard — is migrating toward Dudley Pond and the Happy Hollow wellfield, where Well 1 measured 33.2 ppt before a resin treatment system started in February 2022. Soil at the parcel also shows lead at 303 ppm and barium at 1,030 ppm, just over reportable limits. "The PFAS is a problem," Gould said; "the rest of it is things you have to address." He proposed six more monitoring wells — four on 195 Main St., two on adjoining town-owned 207 Main St. — at roughly $300 per PFAS sample. Public comment on the draft plan runs through May 10.
