Wayland Public Works board to weigh PFAS lease extension in February

WAYLAND — January 23, 2024 — Wayland Public Works board previews PFAS lease decision and reviews MWRA connection progress. Kleinfelder engineer Kirsten Ryan told the board the permanent MWRA supplemental connection design is on track, with a 22-boring geotechnical program submitted for permit and 30 percent design targeted by late summer; activation is projected within five years. The board signaled it will likely extend, not buy out, the ECT2 lease for the Happy Hollow PFAS treatment system, which expires in June and currently costs just over $10,000 per month; a $200,000 resin replacement is already funded. Member George Uveges pressed staff to scrutinize amortized costs baked into the lease. The town pool's water balance fell to about $6,500 after payments of $10,000 and roughly $4,000 against a $22,798 December bill. Select Board member Carol Martin praised the department for cutting outstanding capital projects "from about 50, 55 down to about 30."
