Wayland HRDEI Committee plans community response to high school racist incident

WAYLAND — November 18, 2025 — Wayland HRDEI Committee maps a town-wide response to a racist incident at the high school. Chair Karen Blumenfeld and member Heather Filipino reported on a public statement they issued after the incident and walked colleagues through draft programming including a "Conversations Not Confrontations" dialogue series, a "Nice Isn't Enough" small-group challenge, and potential partnerships with Wayland Dads and True Story Theater. Member Asma and a student member said the high school athletic department had been conspicuously silent; member Yawu cautioned against extending blame to "the whole group, the race." The committee also confirmed a Dec. 10 Human Rights Day event at the Council on Aging featuring Freedom Team founder Jamil Adams, backed by a $400 Village Bank donation and pending Cultural Council funds, and unanimously approved its Oct. 21 minutes before adjourning at 8:04 p.m.
