Wayland HRDEI Committee endorses community pool mural project
WAYLAND — May 20, 2025 — Wayland HRDEI Committee endorses pool mural and plans civil-rights speaker series. The committee voted unanimously Tuesday to co-sponsor a community-led mural at the Town Pool with a $20,000 to $30,000 budget — including $8,000 to $15,000 in artist fees — with Wayland Community Action Network serving as fiscal agent and artist Carla Cohen the likely lead. Chair Karen Blumenfeld and member Asma Khan will scope a community presentation on immigration rights, potentially partnering with the library and drawing speakers from the ACLU, DA Marian Ryan's hate-and-bias task force, and immigrant-rights groups Mira and Lucé, after members cited a Waltham arrest witnessed by recreation director Katherine Brenner. Asma Khan said the question is "how do we respond rather than being the one that's being pulled away." The committee also approved an AANHPI Heritage Month statement and unveiled new $213 banners reading "In Wayland we are many, in Wayland we are one."
