Wayland FinCom recommends $500,000 for special ed reserve, signals stormwater fight

WAYLAND — February 10, 2025 — Wayland Finance Committee confronts $22M-to-$45M swing on long-term water project. Members agreed Monday to footnote rather than fix a fiscal 2027 number for the MWRA connection after licensed site professionals disclosed that PFAS contamination at 195 Main Street, within roughly 500 feet of the Happy Hollow wells, could either force the town into an expensive dual-source design or, over years of state review, justify shutting the wells and going fully to MWRA — "an opportunity to recapture $13 million." A related cleanup article jumped from $150,000 to $250,000. The committee voted to recommend a $500,000 free-cash deposit to the special education reserve, despite frustration that the schools have drained prior $150,000 deposits, and backed CPA articles including a $500,000 playground rehabilitation and the rescission of a $125,000 facade grant from 2021. One member said he would vote against the operating and capital budgets unless $125,000 in recurring stormwater spending is moved back from capital.
