Wayland EDC sends pickup-window zoning proposal to Select Board, Planning Board

WAYLAND — October 18, 2024 — Wayland EDC advances pre-order pickup window proposal for Route 20 vacancies. The Economic Development Committee voted unanimously Oct. 18 to send a draft white paper and two resident and business surveys to the Select Board ahead of its noon packet deadline, seeking authorization to release the polls through Town Manager Michael McCall's office. Chair Rebecca M. Stanizzi framed the proposal as a hybrid between a walk-up window and a full drive-through, citing three long-vacant bank buildings on Route 20 — Santander, Bank of America and TD Bank, some empty up to five years. The draft would cap pickup-window locations at one to three corridor-wide and require a dine-in component to block "purely transitory" takeout-only operations. Members cited Nan's Kitchen, Sweetgreen's "Sweetlane" and Cava's "digital drive-thru" as models, and identified town center activation and Route 20 sidewalk funding as companion priorities. The Planning Board takes up the concept Oct. 22.
