Recreation Commission urges Wayland High to allow senior powder puff game

WAYLAND — October 21, 2024 — Wayland Recreation Commission presses high school to allow Nov. 27 powder puff game. At its Oct. 21 meeting, commissioners spent most of the night on Principal Allison Mizoguchi's refusal to sponsor the senior class flag football tradition against Weston, which 58 Wayland senior girls have signed up to play as a Jimmy Fund fundraiser with a $5,000 goal. Commissioner David Berlin, who read Mizoguchi's email citing "concern for the safety of the students," argued the town should "find a way" to make it happen and noted the MIAA votes Dec. 1 on sanctioning girls flag football statewide. Members proposed offering the school a package of safeguards — professional referees, an on-site police officer, insurance, and a high school football coach from each town as responsible adult — warning the event "has the ability to get out of control" without them. Commissioner Lesley Stewart floated forming a student club to give future games institutional backing. Berlin will request a meeting with school administrators to negotiate terms.
