Wayland EDC narrows 2023 goals, prioritizes Route 20 and business district work

WAYLAND — November 18, 2022 — Wayland Economic Development Committee narrows 2023 goals as Mill Creek 40B looms over Route 20. Chair Rebecca M. Stanizzi rejected the developer's characterization of the Fresh Market site as a "failed plaza," noting Fresh Market still pays rent on roughly seven to eight years of an unused lease. Acting Town Manager John Bugbee said the Select Board is weighing Mill Creek's request for a friendly Local Initiative Project designation by month's end, but warned the developer told officials it would file "either way." Town Planner Robert Hummel confirmed a Route 20 master plan kickoff with Beta Group for the following Tuesday. Members approved October minutes 4-0 and ranked a business improvement district, sidewalk beautification and active tenant recruitment as top 2023 priorities. Member Jeff Vecchio argued marketing and business outreach is work "no committee or department in Wayland" is better situated to lead.
