Wayland details dual-source water plan with MWRA tie-in and new PFAS plant

WAYLAND — October 23, 2025 — Wayland unveils dual-source water plan combining MWRA connection with new Happy Hollow PFAS plant. At an Oct. 23 MEPA community meeting, DPW Director Tom Holder and Kleinfelder engineer Kirsten Ryan outlined a new 4,000-square-foot treatment building behind the high school, a 3.5-million-gallon-per-day pump station at Old Connecticut Path and Castle Road, and a buried pipeline running roughly 5,300 feet along the Hultman Aqueduct to MWRA's Shaft L in Framingham, plus 7,700 feet of replacement water main. Happy Hollow PFOA levels already exceed the state's 20 ppt limit; a stricter federal standard hits in 2029. Roughly $4 million in ARPA funds covered two-thirds of design; construction will be financed through a 20-year, zero-interest Clean Water Trust loan. The Campbell, Chamberlain and Baldwin Pond wells will be decommissioned. Holder called it "a legacy project for the town of Wayland." Town meeting votes on construction funding in May 2026.
