Wayland Conservation Commission sets September deadline on high school turf field cleanup

WAYLAND — July 17, 2024 — Wayland Conservation Commission gives town until September to clean up high school turf field spill. Chair Sean P. Fair told members Wednesday he is ending nearly three years of private monthly calls with school and town officials over a September 2021 crumb rubber discharge that flowed toward the Sudbury River, and will ask the commission to impose maximum daily fines if the site is not cleaned and a proper consultant engaged by early September. Fair called the runoff "a gushing river of black sludge" and said a previously promised grit chamber was never ordered. The commission also re-elected Fair as chair and elected Luke Legere vice chair, 5-0-1, replacing Barbara Howell after more than 30 years; approved a stormwater permit 6-0 for a pool and driveway project at 2 Orchard Lane that cuts tree removals from 41 to 27 and adds 30 replacement plantings; and authorized $113.75 in initial costs for the town's Cascade appeal.
